It may look incredibly pretty and very festive, but when it comes to going about our daily business, a light sprinkling of snow can really get in the way.

So mums might not be best pleased with the news that snow is on the way – this weekend to be specific. According to Met Éireann, temperatures are expected to drop significantly over the next few days, going as low as 7°C in some places.

On Saturday, it is expected to drop even further to 3°C,  with a northern polar air flow likely to bring snow on higher ground, particularly in Donegal where the first snowfall is expected. The Dublin mountains are also expected to be covered in snow.

While northern and western counties are to be the worst affected, at least Storm Barney will finally be on his way.

Experts have predicted that temperatures will be colder than Moscow, with widespread showers also expected over the next few days.

"Widespread showers could turn wintry in the evenings and the northwest of the country will see the worst of the conditions. The wintry showers are unlikely to hit lower ground but not impossible and snow can't be ruled out over the Dublin mountains," the forecaster said.
