Rebecca Adlington has opened up about her split from husband Harry Needs, admitting that he may have entered marriage for the wrong reasons.

The Olympic swimmer wed Needs in 2014, going on to welcome their daughter, Summer, the following year. However, in March 2016, they announced their separation after just 18 months of marriage.

Speaking candidly about the split for the first time, 28-year-old Rebecca told The Mirror that Harry’s proposal may have stemmed from admiration for her incredible professional achievements.

“He was younger than me, he saw Beijing [where she won two medals] and really idolised me,” she explained.

“Harry had to step back and say, ‘I have to figure out whether I like you or whether I like you because of everything you’ve achieved’.”

Rebecca began dating fellow swimmer Harry back in 2011. Despite saying that marriage was a long way off, mainly due to Harry’s age (he’s three years younger than her), the pair got engaged after her Olympics victory.

The two seemed blissfully happy after welcoming daughter Summer, but announced their split just nine months later.

A statement shared to Rebecca’s website read: “It’s after much thought and sadness that we confirm our separation. It is on amicable terms, and we still remain close friends.

“We move forward with respect for one another, and our focus and commitment is on parenting our gorgeous daughter, Summer.

“This will be our only comment on this private matter.”

The pair appear to have stayed true to their promise to remain amicable, with the pair publicly gushing over one another on special family occasions.

When Rebecca turned 28 earlier this year, Harry took to Instagram to share a special tribute to his ‘best friend’.

Posting a photo of them with their daughter, Harry gushed: “Happy birthday, Rebecca. Thanks for being such a stupendous mother to our…better half, and have a marvellous day.”

Rebecca returned the favour on Harry’s birthday, saying: “I know you will have an amazing day as you get to be with Summer this afternoon. Thank you for being an amazing dad.”

It’s so refreshing to hear of a couple remaining on great terms after a split, especially where children are involved.
