Floral tributes and messages of condolence are being left at the scene of an accident which resulted in the tragic death of five-year-old Alexia Walenkaki on Friday.

It is understood that the little girl was playing in Mile End Park when a tree, which was being used as a swing, collapsed on top of her.

According to the Metropolitan Police who this evening commented on the tragic incident, Alexia sustained severe head injuries as a result of the shock event.

Recalling the incident which claimed the life of her daughter, Alexia's mother, Vida Kwotuah, said: "I was watching her every move, I sat where I could see her and keep an eye on her. "

Speaking to Evening Standard, the grief stricken mother explained: "All of a sudden I see this log falling down and I started screaming."

It was established that Vida's daughter had gone into cardiac arrest by the time police and the London Ambulance Services arrived on the scene.

Having been transported to a nearby hospital, Alexia was pronounced dead at 6.43 pm on Friday, with a postmortem set to take place on Wednesday.

Speaking out in the wake of the devastating incident, the Mile End Neighbourhood Police used Twitter as a platform to communicate their regret, writing: "We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Alexia Walenkaki, who tragically died in the Mile End Park on Friday."

Our thoughts are with Alexia's family and friends at this heartbreaking time.
