A family are in mourning this weekend following the death of a 15-year-old girl in North Tyneside last night.

The teenager, whose name has yet to be released to the press, was washed into the sea after a large wave hit the north pier on which the teen and a number of other youths were standing on Cullercoats Bay.

According to emerging reports, the teenager was transported to hospital following a call to emergency services, but tragically died shortly after of a suspected heart attack.

It is understood that a further three youngsters, who were in the late teen’s company at the time of the devastating incident, were also taken to hospital, but are said to have emerged from the accident unscathed.

Commenting on the tragedy, Chief Inspector of Northumbria Police, Paul Knox, said: “We need to remind people of the danger of the sea, particularly in the dark and cold at this time of year, when tides are high and people can be taken unawares by the strength of the waves and the inherent dangers of the sea.”

Reports confirm that the current temperature in Cullercoats is below freezing.

Our thoughts go out to the teen’s family and friends at this devastating time.
