We rely on the authorities and emergency services so much when an accident occurs, and their role often extends far beyond what you would ever imagine.

This was certainly the case for American police officer Nick Struck when he was recently called to the scene of a family car crash.

Nick has become a viral internet sensation this week, after a photo of him distracting a young child, while fellow officers tend to the victims, emerged.

According to reports, a tire blew in the family’s SUV, causing the vehicle to flip, ejecting both parents and their four children from inside. When police arrived, the father was pronounced dead at the scene, and Officer Struck took it upon himself to distract the young child while authorities dealt with the tragic incident.

A witness took a photo of Officer Struck holding the little girl, pointing to something in the opposite direction. He also sang, to comfort her. The poignant image was later shared online and has touched the hearts of many around the world.

Recalling the moment, Officer Struck told 9News: “When you hear that there’s children involved, I’ll tell you what, everyone that responds to that scene, they get that pit in their stomach.”

“The first thing we do when we get on scene is we just try to, if we can comfort anybody, of course, we’re going to go to the kids. My daughter, when she falls down and hurts herself, I sing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’. So I started singing it to the little girl,” he added.

According to reports, no family members were wearing restraints or safety belts at the time of the accident. The mother and one child were airlifted to hospital, with the three remaining children taken by ambulance.
