Reports are emerging of a bus crash in Tennessee which has left six children dead and 23 injured.

District Attorney Neal Pinkston told Channel 3 that five children were killed in the crash; the sixth child died at the hospital afterward.

The incident occurred in Chattanooga and, according to US media, the driver was taken into custody.

He faces five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving charges.

The crash happened at 4pm local time and it is believed the children were aged between five and 10-years-old.

Chattanooga Fire & Police Enlightener took to Facebook to encourage everyone to donate blood before writing: "This one is gonna hurt for a very LONG time."

The bus ended up wrapped around a tree off Talley Road in the Brainerd area, and it took rescuers at least two hours to remove all children from the bus.

"Our hearts go out ... to the families, the neighborhood, the school, for all the people involved in this," Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said at an afternoon news conference, according to The Tennessean.

"We assure you we are doing everything we can."

Our hearts go out to the families at this tragic time.
