A heartbroken family, whose daughter was involved in a road accident in Thailand at the weekend, have appealed to the public for blood donors to come forward in an effort to save their child's life.

21-year-old Lucy Hill, who is currently on her gap year, was travelling on her moped when she was hit by a car on Saturday in an accident which required emergency surgery and resulted in extreme blood loss.

According to emerging reports, less than 1% of the Thai population have the same blood type as Lucy meaning her family have been forced to launch an appeal on social media urging holiday-makers in Thailand to come forward if they are A-.

Taking to Facebook, a friend of the young woman outlined the urgency of the matter, beginning: "Lucy suffered an accident being hit by a car whilst on a moped. She is now in intensive care and has had emergency surgery, but is needing blood transfusions."

Appealing to anyone who may be able to help, Lauren Hall continued: "Negative blood is rare in Thailand and sourcing the blood is difficult. If anyone is around and is A NEGATIVE blood type, please contact myself on Facebook or call +61 484 346 507."

Insistent that the efforts of the public cannot be underestimated at this time, Lauren wrote: "I understand it is your holiday but this is my friend. It doesn't take long and it will do a great thing."

Lucy, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was a student at Leeds Beckett University and had intended to include Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Australia in her travels.

It is understood Alison Hill, Lucy's mother, has flown to Thailand and is currently receiving assistance from Thailand's British Consulate.
