Losing a child is the most traumatic and heartbreaking ordeal a parent will ever have to endure, so to hear of a grieving parent being the victim of online abuse is just horrifying.

This is what Donna Hussey – the mother of three-year-old Freddie, who lost his life after being struck by a runaway car trailer – has had to endure since the loss of her little one.

The Hussey family were in Bristol Crown Court this week to witness the vehicle’s driver, Tony Davies, being sentenced to 200 hours of community service for the child’s death, and went on to open up on the shocking fallout of their son’s death.

While Freddie’s death has been attributed to a handbrake lever being in the wrong place, causing the trailer to roll 30 metres and onto the pavement where Freddie was walking, his mum Donna has experienced horrific abuse from online trolls accusing her of being responsible for the tragedy.

Amid claims that Freddie was walking behind his mum when the trailer struck him, Donna revealed that she has become a target for hateful accusations and comments.

“I’ve had lots of hurtful comments and people Facebooking me, sending abusive messages that I was a bad mum. I see little kids a few steps in front or behind their parents every day. I have to live with what happened,” she told the court.

She added: “I just want people, before they start making nasty comments, to really think about how they are with their children and how they feel it is right to judge.”
