While having a cold at any age could never be described as fun, our hearts particularly go out to babies dealing with a nasty bout of the sniffles.

Stuffy head, runny nose and fever are all common symptoms of a cold, and can leave your little one feeling irritable, upset and overtired.

Need some advice on alleviating your child's discomfort? Try these simple tips to ease that nasty congestion, helping them get some much-needed rest:

1. Give them LOTS of fluids

Hydration is essential for a little one battling a stuffy nose, so ensure you’re giving your baby lots of breast milk or formula throughout the day. From around four months on, give your child some cool water, and from about six months or so on, you can try adding a little fruit juice to the water to give it some flavour. It's important to remember that babies can feel less like taking milk when they’re unwell, so be sure to monitor them carefully for dehydration – if you have any concerns, call your doctor right away.

2. Put their mattress at a slight incline

Elevating your baby’s head a little can help drain that mucus away, clearing their stuffed up head and helping them sleep. It’s advised to keep the incline to a bare minimum however, so fold up a towel a couple of times and place it under the mattress in your child’s cot. Why under the mattress? Well it's simply a safety precaution; placing a pillow or cushion over the mattress could be a suffocation hazard.

3. Give them pain relief

A specially-for-children paracetamol medicine can help relieve the pain and fever associated with a cold – helping your little one get some much-needed rest. However, it’s advised to consult your doctor prior to giving any medicine to a baby, and of course, always read the label carefully to ensure it's suitable for your child.

4. Help them to breathe easily

There’s nothing like a blocked nose to make your little one feel miserable, so to help solve the sniffle conundrum, use Calpol® Soothe & Care Nasal Spray - a product ideal for clearing those stuffy noses. Calpol® Soothe & Care Nasal Spray washes away mucus build-up, helping your little one to breathe more clearly and easily. And with the Calpol® Soothe & Care Vapour Plug & Nightlight, which releases soothing lavender and chamomile vapours, you can continue to gently soothe your child throughout the night.

5. Carry or hold them upright

You will no doubt want to give your baby extra comforting cuddles when they’re feeling unwell, so why not use your mummy cuddles as a nifty way to drain away that mucus too? Hold your little one in an upright position on a comfy chair or sofa with your back well supported, or if you’re standing up, in a baby sling.

6. Call your doctor for advice

If you have any concerns about how your baby is feeling, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and pop into your doctor for advice. Monitor your little one carefully and if they seem particularly out of sorts, feverish or if they’re wheezing, make that call. Always seek medical help if your baby is under three months and their temperature is higher than 38°C (100.4°F) or if they are between three and six months and it's higher than 39°C (102.2°F) or if they are over six months and it's 40°C (104°F) or higher.
