Dogs - man's best friend and for many owners a source of unconditional love.

One very special puppy, Todd, went to above and beyond to show his owner just how important she was.

When on a hike, the pair encountered a snake, and without hesitation, the puppy put his own life on the line.

Todd's owner, Paula Godwin, took to social media to explain the ordeal.

Paula explained that she was out hiking on Friday in Arizona when she "almost stepped" on a rattlesnake.

"But my hero of a puppy Todd saved me", she penned on Facebook.

"He jumped right in front of my leg where I surely would have got bit.

"This is what a hero looks like", she added.

The poor pup who isn't even a year old got a nasty bite to the face, whilst he had his muzzle on.

Speaking to KTAR News, as soon as the Todd got the injury, Paula picked him up and ran down the hill with her other dog, Copper.

Her quick thinking meant less than 20 minutes later, Todd received antivenom on arrival at an animal hospital.

Todd is recovering well, and his swelling is going down.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in the hero pup's honour and to help to other dogs and owners in the area who may need help with paying vet bills for anti-venom.

Good boy, Todd!
