An 11-year-old boy’s brave actions helped to save a teenage boy trapped in a burning apartment in Inchicore on Monday night.

Calum McCann, who lives at Tyrone Place apartments was roused by his mum when a nearby apartment went on fire on at 11.20 pm.

The youngster and his mother knocked on their neighbours’ doors to warn them about the fire in case it spread.

Mum Maggie Green and her three children, John, 13, Francie, eight, and seven-year-old Savannah were trapped inside the burning apartment and couldn’t escape because there were bars across their balcony.

Callum’s mother, who wishes to remain anonymous told The Irish Mirror: "There was loads of smoke. We ran out and their house was just blazing.

"We ran around the back and saw that the young fella (John) was outside on his balcony but couldn't get out.

"We weren't sure how bad it was but then the next door neighbour here grabbed a ladder”.

The bars on the balcony are in place for security reasons but they prevented John from escaping.

Callum ran to get wirecutters from his house which he gave to the neighbour to free the traumatised boy.

"The neighbour tried to go in to get the others but the smoke was too much so he couldn't but the fire brigade were on the scene within minutes”, Callum’s mum explained.

Fire brigade units from Dophin's Barn and Tara Street stations attended the scene of the blaze and spent several hours extinguishing the blaze.

Five Dublin Fire Brigade tenders, one area ladder, five ambulances and Dublin Fire Brigade advance paramedics all attended the scene, according to The Irish Independent.

Neighbours of the family are said to be very shocked after the horrific fire.

Maggie and her son Francie are believed to be in a serious condition in hospital while Savannah suffered burns to her hands and John was treated for burns also.

The third child, a 13-year-old boy, is being treated at Temple Street Hospital for burns, while the woman is being treated at St. James's Hospital.

Gardai are now investigating the circumstances of the fire. They have been examining the area and carrying out door-to-door enquiries.

Gardaí have sealed off the flat and have asked anyone with information to contact them at Kilmainham Garda Station on (01) 666 9700.
