A mum-of-one is being hailed a hero after she threw her daughter to safety, after a fire broke out in their home.

21-year-old Shelby Carter acted quickly and bravely when her family home caught fire, managing to strap her 12-day-old baby, Keana, into her car seat before throwing her from a second-story window of their home in Wyoming.

The mum-of-one managed to phone emergency services before getting caught in the blaze.

The newborn was found by first responders with only minor burns in the debris, however, tragically, Shelby’s body was found inside the home after dying from smoke inhalation.

"Shelby's selfless, heroic actions prove that there is no end to a mother's love for a child," Jacob Plumer, Captain of Wyoming-Speer Fire Department, told TODAY

"This tragic event reminds us just how short life can be."

The heartbreaking incident has now left Shelby’s fiancé, DeShawn Davis, a single father to baby Keana.

DeShawn and other members of the pair’s family began a crowdfunding campaign on Go Fund Me which has already surpassed their target of $40,000.
