After weeks of campaigning and intense media coverage, the results of the marriage equality and presidential age of eligibility referenda are almost upon us.

Following hours of counting and checking, it looks as though the historic referendum on marriage equality will pass.

Commenting on the momentous voting result, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton said: “This is a great moment for Ireland. In a way we are becoming a rainbow nation where we have a huge amount of diversity…I want to thank everyone who voted – whether it was Yes or No. It was a great democratic day.”

While the final vote has not yet been announced, the Yes side have been tentatively optimistic as the voting statistics began to roll in this morning. So far, many constituencies have declared overwhelming support for the 'Yes' campaign.

Yesterday’s vote also saw the people of Ireland voting on the proposal to lower the age of eligibility for presidential candidacy to 21. The final statistics show this proposal is likely not to pass.

Reports last night indicated that a record number of people came out to cast their votes in yesterday's referenda.

What a truly momentous day this is for Ireland.
