How can I get a professional looking hair colour at home?

The right hair colour can transform your appearance by brightening up your skin tone, covering those unwanted grey strands and making your eye colour pop. However, a visit to the hairdresser can put a big dent in your salary. So, we have shared our top tips on how to colour your hair at home giving salon results for a fraction of the cost.

Read the product descriptions
The picture on the box can be very deceiving, so do not base your expectations on these. Usually on the side of the box there is a chart that will help you see what shade you will actually get to from the colour you are now. This will give you a much better indication of your likely results.

Do a strand test
Test the product on a small section of your hair. This is important to make sure you like the colour and also to determine how long you need to leave the dye on to achieve your desired colour. Assess your results in natural light.

Condition
Conditioning is a must for all colour treated hair. Most home dyes come with a conditioning treatment, so there is no excuse not to use it. Leave conditioner on the hair for approximately two minutes after rinsing the colour, and repeat once a week.

Don’t overdo it
It is not necessary to redeye your whole head of hair every time. Simply apply dye to the roots, where regrowth has occurred, and smooth it over the previously coloured hair for two – three minutes before rinsing. This will save your hair from becoming dry and brittle
