The census was held just three months ago on Sunday, 24th April, and is a detailed account of everyone who was in the county on that particular night.

Used for the development of public services among other things, the results found that the population of Ireland has risen to 4,757,976, an increase of 3.7 percent since 2011.

Dublin’s population is currently at 1,345,402 with the highest increase in Fingal (8.1 percent); the commuter belt counties of Meath, Kildare and Laois and the cities of Cork and Galway also saw population increases.

Donegal saw the largest decrease in population with a fall of -1.5 percent over the past five years; Mayo and Sligo also experienced declines.

Net migration (total population increase less the natural increase) is estimated to be -28,558. This compares with net inward migration of 115,800.

According to the results, household formation has fallen behind population growth over the past five years. The number of vacant dwellings has fallen by 29,889 and now stands at 259,562. The vacancy rate has also fallen to 12.8 percent.

Within this the number of holiday homes has increased marginally between 2011 and 2016, from 59,395 to 61,204.

“While the number of holiday homes has increased marginally (up 1,809) the number of other vacant dwellings has decreased by almost 14 per cent since April 2011, or 31,700 units,” explained Brendan Murphy, Statistician at the CSO.

“These falls can be seen right across Ireland with the largest falls in Carlow and Dublin.”

There is a legal obligation to complete the census form, and those who refused to co-operate will be prosecuted.

“We’d like to thank the enumerators and their supervisors for all their hard work over the course of the census, and in particular for making the publication of these results today possible,” Mr. Murphy concluded.

“Scanning and processing of the two million actual census forms is well underway and the first definitive results are due to be published next March, within a year of census day”.
