While most of us mums would love to be able to offer our children the perfect room to revise, study and get to grips with the numerous tasks assigned by their teacher, it's just not always possible.

Whether you're struggling for space or peace and quiet in a busy household, it can be difficult to guarantee your little one the perfect space to tend to their academic responsibilities.

However with a little forward planning and some simple rules, you will be able to create the perfect homework station no matter how big or small, quiet or hectic your home is!

1. Decide on a space

Your child needs to work in comfortable surroundings in order to meet their potential, so be sure the space you settle on is somewhere they can stay for at least an hour without finding an excuse to leave.

If your child doesn't have a desk in their room, then ensure the kitchen table, for at least one hour a day, is free of food and clutter, and acts as a workspace which allows your little one to get their head down.

2. Limit distractions

If you often have music playing around the house or keep an eye on the afternoon news, consult with your child about this.

If they feel they would benefit form peace and quiet, then it's important you sacrifice your daily soundtrack while they relax and get to work.

3. Stock up on supplies

It can be incredibly frustrating watching your child fall behind their routine as they search the house for a pencil parer or extra paper.

Prepare a special homework box which is chock-full of extra stationary and within easy reach of your child should they need it.

4. Handy hints

If your child's workspace allows it, pin some helpful hints and handy checklists to the wall around it.

If there are certain grammatical rules or mathematical equations which often leave your child a little stumped, then be sure to post them near the workspace so they can familiarise themselves with them on a daily basis.

5. Use a clock or stopwatch

Children respond well to limits so it's only fair they know how long they are expected to work at their station.

If they know they are due to finish when the big hand reaches twelve, they will be able to concentrate with a clearer head.
