Between hectic days in the office to evenings running around after the kids at home, it is so easy for your relationship with your other half to suffer. Despite your best efforts and plans, it can sometimes seem as though there is no longer such a thing as ‘us time’, and this can be incredibly frustrating for you individually, and as a couple.

Well, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you have the perfect excuse to switch the focus back on yourselves, and these tips might just rekindle the flame on this, the festival of love.

1. Clear your schedule

You will know from experience by now that something is bound to get in the way if you don’t put the foot down. Valentine’s Day is one day out of the year where you and your loved one can focus on yourselves, so make sure to clear your schedule and prioritise your relationship. Chores, dinners and late work shifts are off the menu tonight, and make a promise that you will stick to the agenda. Unless it’s an emergency, nothing is going to drag you away from the most special date night of the year.

2. Get some alone time

When we say ‘us time’, the children, the dogs and your next-door neighbour don’t figure in this plan. As much as you adore your little darlings, this is a special time for you both as a couple; make arrangements with your babysitter or a relative, and try your best to switch off from 'parent-mode'.

3. Pull out all the stops

As parents, it’s rare to get this special time together, so make the most of it. Whether it’s making a reservation at a favourite restaurant, pushing the boat out with a fancy home-cooked meal or getting dressed up, agree that this will be a special night on every level.

4. Focus on the ‘now’

You may have had a row before leaving the house that morning; he may have forgotten to pack the kids’ lunches before the school run – park any drama and focus on the ‘now’. You have planned and prepped for a romantic night together, and by gosh, you’re going to get just that! Surrender to the moment, and forget the trappings of daily life, and you are sure to have a magical night.
