As she promotes her latest movie, Lion in which she plays the adoptive mother to the main character, Nicole Kidman has been speaking about her own personal experience with adoption.

The movie is centred around the story of Saroo Brierley who goes in search of his biological parents and Nicole says she would support her son Connor and daughter Isabelle if they wanted to find their birth parents.

The mum-of-four adopted two children during her marriage to Tom Cruise and says that she believes that’s part of being a parent to adopted kids.

“Yeah, of course. That's part of my belief on adoption. If a child wants to find their birth mother, I'm absolutely supportive of that,” she told E! News.

After Nicole split with Tom in 2001, the pair shared custody of their two children until they decided they wanted to live with their father.

Speaking of the impact this role has had on her, Nicole says that she had a greater understanding of her character thanks to her experience.

“I can see now, for Lion, that it was important to me because I’m a mother with adopted children,” the star previously told Us Weekly of Isabella, 23, and Connor, 21.

“This movie is a love letter to my children.”
