Three members of one family have been laid to rest in Mayo after a horrific accident claimed the lives of a grandmother, a mother, and her son.

Mary Ann Wilson who was in her 70s, her daughter Marcella Wilson, who was in her 40s and Marcella’s young son, Sean Wilson McGlynn, who was just seven years old, were killed when their car collided with a truck.

The accident occurred on the N17 Galway to Sligo Road at Lisduff on September 11 at approximately 12:30pm.

Marcella, Mary Ann and Sean, who were from Binghamstown, Belmullet, were driving to Galway to take Mary Ann to a hospital appointment when the crash occurred.

It’s believed they were only driving because they had missed the bus in Castlebar and decided to drive to Claremorris to try and catch it there.

Their heartbroken family laid their loved ones to rest today in a triple funeral service.

Tragically, Marcella was recovering from a brain tumour, having beaten cancer.

The devoted mum leaves behind three older children, Anthony, nine, Kelly, 14, and Amy, 16.

Hundreds of people gathered at the church of St Joseph this afternoon to pay their respects to the family, according to The Connaught Telegraph.

16-year-old Amy made a moving address to the congregation, saying: “As you know", she explained, "I lost my granny, my little brother and my mum.

"I just want Sean, the baby of the house, to know we will always love him and he will be in our hearts and minds forever”.

Local priest Father Kevin Hegarty paid a special tribute to each family member.

"Motherhood was at the core of her being. She knew the language of love and she expressed it eloquently in the way she lived”, he said of grandmother Mary Ann.

Referring to mum Marcella, he said he had known her as a student and that she was “full of life and laughter”.

"She had her personal difficulties but she confronted them with courage, grace, and dignity”, he added.

Describing Seán, Fr. Hegarty said the little boy had been full of life, energy and “divilment”.

All three were laid to rest in Cross Cemetery on the Erris Peninsula this afternoon.

Our hearts go out to the family at this tragic time.
