A machine gun attack in north Dublin has raised much concern regarding the circulation of high velocity weapons in the country's capital.

The shocking attack, which took place shortly before 8.30pm on Sunday, saw an innocent family's car raked with machine gun fire in a case of what is believed to be mistaken identity.

The incident, which occurred in the Farnham Drive estate in Finglas, left residents astounded as they recalled the evening's events, saying; "I was in the sitting room and all of a sudden there were a few loud bangs in a row. I thought it was somebody hitting my car. I looked out and saw a motorbike speeding up the road. I couldn't believe it when I heard it was a gun being fired, it's shocking."

The family, none of whom are known to Gardaí, were targeted by a gunman who was wearing dark clothes and travelling as a passenger on a motorbike.

The gunman fled the scene immediately after the shots were discharged.

Commenting on the incident which shook the Dublin housing estate, one resident said: "It must be a case of mistaken identity, the family are lovely, well-educated people. They're quiet and keep to themselves so I can't imagine any reason why someone would do this, other then that they got the wrong house."

At this point, no arrests have been made and the the family, who left their home yesterday morning, have yet to return.

The horrifying incident comes just days after the discovery of firearms and ammunition in a south Dublin park last week.
