When it comes to mealtimes, nothing gets in the way of filling our bellies with tasty fuel for the day, and the ‘secret love affair’ of Irish foodies has been revealed this week!
According to a recent survey carried out by Irish favourite Dubliner Cheese, the humble toastie is one of the country’s all-time favourite snacks.
The research was carried out to mark a very special day, today – International Grilled Cheese Sandwich (aka Toastie) Day!
To mark the occasion, Dubliner Cheese decided to investigate just what it is about the humble toastie that has us so obsessed, with almost one-third of us (31.4%) indulging in one more than once a week.
It seems simplicity is the essence of our obsession with the toastie, with survey respondents opting for the tasty treat due to the ever-present supply of bread, cheese and butter in the cupboards. Indeed, well over half of the respondents (58.2%) choose a toastie for lunch because it’s just so quick and easy.
Whether you have it with soup (17.6%) or a bag of crisps (17.1%), it seems the toastie ticks every box for a tasty, healthy and comforting snack.
As for the celebrity Irish people would most like to share a toastie with? Presenter and comedian Graham Norton came out on top, with hunky actor Liam Neeson following closely – we’d take either!
