One of the great joys of life as a parent is watching your little ones playing and bonding with your own parents, which is why so many people will no doubt be charmed by Irish mum Caroline English’s novel idea.

Caroline is a new mum who recently lost her parents, and her mixed emotions of joy and grief have set her mind and her memories in motion. Thinking back over the delight that visits from little ones would bring to the elderly in her parents’ nursing home, Caroline decided to do something to bring a little more sunshine to everyone’s life – she launched the ‘Adopt A Granny’ campaign.

The new mum wrote a letter to The Anton Savage Show on Today FM, explaining the concept and the motivation behind it.

“A lot of the elderly are very much with it and have a lovely sense of the world, and I think their company is something that would be of huge benefit to those who, unfortunately, don’t have grandparents nearby or still alive,” she wrote.

Yesterday, we got this email from listener Caroline who spoke to Anton this morning, it reads: Hi Anton,I was...

So, how does Adopt A Granny work? Well, members of a community reach out to a local school or nursing home and ask if they can run the initiative, then they organise a day of fun, activities and conversation for young and old together.

Once both establishments have agreed to give Adopt A Granny a go, there are a few conditions and regulations – you can check them out here, online.

Closing her letter, Caroline added: “I have a few weeks left in my maternity leave and am obviously still in the early days of grieving, but I would welcome any feedback or, even better, some real help to help me make this notion come to life in memory of my truly wonderful parents...I really was the centre of their world. They gave me everything in life, every opportunity, and I wanted for nothing; so I would I guess love to 'pay that forward' in some way for them.”
