A new arrangement between authorities in the Republic of Ireland and the Philippines will allow parents here to adopt children from the island country.

The Adoption Authority of Ireland (AAI) confirmed the news this week, after the formal signing of papers with the presiding organisation in the Philippines.

The new agreement was brought about under the provisions of the 1993 Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Inter-Country Adoption.

Families in Ireland will now have the option to adopt from the Philippines along with the US, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Bulgaria, China, Poland and Lithuania.

Commenting on the latest news, Chairman of the AAI Dr Geoffrey Shannon hailed it as a ‘significant’ step forward.

Regarding the newly signed agreement, Dr Shannon explained: “It will provide a clear roadmap as to how the inter-country adoption process will operate between Ireland and the Philippines.”
