Domestic abuse has been a hotly-discussed topic in recent times, and with research by Safe Ireland revealing that 440,000 women in the Republic of Ireland experience physical and sexual violence from a male partner, it’s time that action was taken to tackle the issue.

This weekend, two of our most talented stars will team up to raise awareness in the campaign to end domestic violence, with singer Hozier and actress Saoirse Ronan collaborating on a charity single.

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, Hozier will release a new video for his song Cherry Wine, starring the Oscar-nominated actress. The video, directed by Emmy-winning Irish director Dearbhla Walsh, will tell the story of a young woman dealing with a physically abusive relationship.

Columbia Records, Island Records and Sony/ATV Music Publishing will donate proceeds from downloads to various international domestic abuse charities, with Safe Ireland chosen as the designated Irish charity.

While Saoirse revealed that she is ‘honoured’ to be a part of the project, Hozier explained the message behind the song: “With the song Cherry Wine, I tried to get across the difficulty of coming to terms with and facing up to domestic violence and the dynamic of an abusive relationship. I'm honoured to be joined by Saoirse Ronan, Dearbhla Walsh and Moe Dunford in spreading awareness on this issue.”

90cent from each iTunes single download of Cherry Wine in the Republic of Ireland will be donated to Safe Ireland, so you can treat yourself while making a difference. For more information, visit www.safeireland.ie.
