By now, you will know all about the devastation wreaked in Amatrice, Italy, following Wednesday’s earthquake.

 

Amid reports of hundreds dead and many more missing – including children – a glimmer of hope has emerged this morning.

 

Camera footage has captured the dramatic rescue of a 10-year-old schoolgirl from the rubble, in the town of Pescara del Tronto.

 

 

According to reports, the little girl spent some 17 hours trapped in the wreckage before emergency services were finally able to free her.

 

In the video, a group of rescuers are seen calling for little ‘Giulia’, before cheering and clapping as she is pulled from the rubble alive.

 

The earthquake, which has been described in some quarters as ‘apocalyptic’, reached a magnitude of 6.2.

 

The latest reports put the current death toll at 247, with hundreds more missing.

 

 

The ‘quake is said to have struck during the night, with aftershocks felt almost 100 miles away, in Rome.

 

In a statement, Italy’s Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi said: “Right now, we feel terrible pain. Italy is a family that has been hit and struck, but we are not going to be stopped.”
