Congratulations to Co. Clare! Ennis has been announced as Ireland's cleanest town of 2017.

Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) declared the Clare town the winner after An Taisce surveyed 25 towns and 15 city areas on their behalf.

Ennis managed to triumph over Kildare, last year's winner, and Roscommon, another close contender.

An Taisce said of the winning town, "All approach roads to Ennis got the top litter grade and this high standard was maintained for almost all of the sites surveyed in the town."

IBAL is recognising the town's efforts by gifting them with an impressive €40,000 commissioned statue. Those lucky Ennis natives!

"To achieve top spot now requires maintaining an entire town in an almost pristine condition, which a local authority cannot do alone," Conor Hogan of IBAL stated.

The runners-up will receive 'Emerald Queen' Norway maple trees to beautify their localities.

88 percent of the towns surveyed were considered at least as clean as the European average.

Here are the top 10 cleanest towns in Ireland, all of which exceeded European norms:

Ranking Town
1 Ennis
2 Kildare
3 Roscommon
4 Dublin Airport Environs
5 Tallaght
Tied for 6 Longford
Tied for 6 Kilkenny
8 Clonmel
9 Leixlip
10 Balbriggan

Cities were less impressive, with Dublin City Centre unfortunately falling back to be moderately littered.

The capital's North Inner City did not fare well and was listed as being littered.

Limerick City markedly improved its cleanliness, while Waterford ranked again as the cleanest city.

Do any of these rankings surprise you, mums? How did your hometown stack up?
