We all know the bond which exists between children and their pets, but some instances definitely serve to remind us that the cats and dogs which have a space in our homes are often more than mere pets - they are family members and, at times, life-savers.

Taking to Facebook, Dorrie Nuttal outlined a chain of events which could have resulted in heartbreak no parent should have to endure and paid tribute to pet dog, Jedi, whose quick-thinking and compassionate nature saved his owner, Dorrie's son Luke.

Opening up about her little boy who suffers from diabetes, Dorrie explained that while she checks her child's blood sugar levels throughout the day, Luke's condition leaves him vulnerable when he and the rest of the family is asleep.

Jedi, however, has been trained to sniff out high and low levels of sugar in the young boy, who has Type 1 Diabetes, and recently proved he's an invaluable member of the Nuttal family.

"No alarms were going off, no one was checking blood, no one was thinking about diabetes, and it's in those moments when our guards are down, when we are just living life, when we let our minds drift from diabetes, that it has the upper hand-and things can get scary very fast...but thankfully we have a Jedi," Dorrie told Facebook users.

"Jedi jumped off the bed, then back on again, though I felt him do this I didn't wake up. Then Jedi laid on me. I woke up. He jumped off the bed and half on and would not budge when I told him to get back up. I got out of bed, he bowed, Luke's CGM said he was 100 steady."

Despite telling Jedi all was well, Dorrie realised the dog was reluctant to back down, with Dorrie continuing: "I told him to get up on the bed, he held his ground didn't budge, he refused. Then I knew he meant business and the sleepy fog started to wear off and I began to think clearer."

Recalling the moment she realised her son was in grave danger, Dorrie continued: "I suddenly was fully awake and I knew there was an issue. I pricked his finger and got this, 57 is way too low, and by Jedi's behaviour I guarantee he was dropping fast."

Devastated she was unaware of her child's condition, but relieved he had a guardian angel in the form of Jedi, Dorrie wrote: "We are his safety net, he goes to bed every night, and although he doesn't know it he relies 100% on us to keep him safe overnight."

Sharing a tender image of her pet dog keeping watching over her son, Dorrie wrote: "This is a picture of a Jedi saving his boy. Amidst a disease that does everything in its power to make life so much harder, this is a picture of loyalty and love and perseverance."

Dorrie, who is determined to raise awareness of the illness from which her son suffers, concluded her touching post with the words: "A reminder that we will not let diabetes win, that we will never give up, and that we will always fight for our children."

Having been liked 370,000 times and shared 180,000 times Dorrie's post has also been inundated with messages of support, with one Facebook user writing: "Just goes to show how dogs are so faithful and trusting they put their lives in our hands and in return they safeguard loved ones."

We're so grateful to know that Luke has such a wonderful friend by his side.
