With the same-sex marriage referendum edging ever closer in the Republic of Ireland, it seems adults aren't the only ones with opinions on the highly sensitive matter.

With campaigners from both sides regularly weighing in on the subject in both print and online media, it sometimes takes a little more effort for children to have their voices heard.

So when 9-year-old Olivia Hanley put pen to paper to express her thoughts, she ensured she was clear, concise and well-mannered when addressing those in power.

Her beautifully-written letter lays bare her thoughts on the referendum taking place on May 22nd this year and offers an insight into her personal experience of the issues at hand.

Expressing her stance on the matter, the little girl wrote: "Dear Irish leaders, Hi my name is Olivia, I am nine years old, I don't know why there is a vote for my uncle my to get married to a man and I would be devastated if he was not really married."

Olivia made her feelings clear by urging the public to vote yes, writing: "I would love if everybody would vote Yes. Spread the word - vote yes. There is no difference, it's just true love. If you do this I will be really happy."

Olivia's poignant letter was brought to the attention of social media users when her proud cousin, Robert Jackman, uploaded it to his Facebook account, writing: "This is a letter from my cousin Olivia who is 9 years old. Olivia told her Mam it was for the Irish Government."

Well done to Olivia for contributing to this very important moment in Irish history.
