While we sometimes long for our children to act a little bit more mature or exert a tiny bit more independence, when the time comes for them to cast off the traditions of their childhood, it can come a blow to most of us.

One mum, who was informed in no uncertain terms that certain traditions must now be laid to rest, shared her story on popular site, Imgur.

Uploading an image of a note penned by her daughter, Lexie, one mum reminded all of us that childhood rituals can often hold greater significance in the eyes of the parents than the child.

Offering her mum and dad a snapshot into her own world, Lexi began her note: "Dear "Tooth Fairy", I don't believe in the Tooth Fairy anymore. I know it's you who gets the money and puts it under my pillow, mom and dad."

Attempting to see things from her parents' perspective, Lexie, who left the big reveal on her pillow for her parents to find, wrote: "I'm sorry if this is hard for you, but I'm 9 now."

And just in case her parents could seek any solace from Christmas and Easter festivities, Lexie dashed those hopes with two postscripts, writing: "P.S. I don't believe in Santa Claus either. P.S. Daddy, I knew it was you last Easter, hiding my Easter eggs!"

Well, that's that then!
