A tree which stood at an estimated 40 feet in a playground in Stourbridge Common fell in a freak incident earlier this week.

Thankfully nobody was injured during the incident which took place in a popular Cambridge playground, but local councillors have used the incident to highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspection regimes in public areas.

A local resident commented on the event, saying: "It is a substantial tree and if it had fallen on a child it could have certainly killed them. It looks quite dramatic to see this huge tree lying on the ground just at the play area."

Uncertain as to the cause of the incident, Cllr Carina O' Reilly said: "It's too early for me to say what caused the tree to fall, and I'm just glad that nobody was hurt."

Cllr. O' Reilly acknowledged the potential tragedy which could have resulted from the incident and is keen to avoid future mishaps, saying: "We can't prevent every tree or branch from falling. Sometimes it's impossible to see internal damage from the outside. However, by inspecting trees regularly and by taking down any that have become diseased and dangerous, we can minimise risks to passers-by."
