We have had to report on a number of upsetting stories this week, and this latest one is just as alarming.

A man was reportedly arrested this weekend after a six-week-old baby was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries. It is believed the baby was the victim of an assault.

Sources claim that the incident occurred in Galway on Monday, with a female infant brought in to the nearby University Hospital Galway with the horrific injuries.

After receiving initial treatment, the child was then transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin, due to the seriousness of the injuries.

An investigation into the shocking incident was launched shortly after by Gardaí at Mill Street in Galway, and an arrest was made this weekend.

According to reports, a man in his thirties was arrested and questioned about the alleged assault, later being released without charge. It is believe that the man is known to the child.

A source said of the incident: “This is a very serious and sensitive case. The child was badly hurt. There were very distressing scenes at those hospitals this week. There was a notable Garda presence after the child was brought here.”

What a shocking story. Our hearts go out to that poor little child.
