It's pretty hard to imagine, but Christmas is actually one of the sexiest times of the year.

Between all the drinks, and cosy nights in - people tend to get very frisky during the festive season, despite the constant bloating from mince pies.

Anyway, one London-based midwife has actually made an appeal on social media, begging people to stop having sex at Christmas - because it leads to a massive surge in September births.

"How is it only the 5th of September? I can’t take 25 more days of this. If you know or love a midwife, PLEASE STOP SHAGGING AT CHRISTMAS," she wrote after a busy first week of the month, adding that the peak date for births each year is 26th September.

Mhairi Maharry wrote on Twitter: ¿How is it only the 5th of September? I can¿t take 25 more days of this. If you know or love a midwife, PLEASE STOP S******* AT CHRISTMAS.¿

A convenient nine months after Stephen's Day.

Mhairi Maharry, 33, took to Twitter to  ask that people abstain from sex this year after a busy first week of the month - jokingly, we might add.

Thousands of people have liked the tweet since she posted it last week, with hundreds more commenting on it.

"'m so sorry, my first child was a September baby. The midwife on the ward was nearing a breakdown. I can't apologise enough,"wrote one apologetic mother.

Another Twitter user said: "Fair enough. As someone due in 3 weeks, I apologise for adding to your distress."

And Mhairi's point is actually backed up by cold, hard facts, with statistics claiming that births are most common in September, and least likely in December.

Can't argue with that. Pass the mince pies.
