A mother in the States may face charges of child endangerment after dangling a two-year-old boy over a cheetah enclosure in Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio.

The shocking even which saw the child tumble into the 12 foot pit on Saturday afternoon astounded onlookers, with one eyewitness saying: "I was just shocked. I didn't understand how the parents let the kid go over the thing."

According to witnesses, the horrified parents jumped into the enclosure following their son's descent into the pit and pulled him to safety prior to paramedics arrival.

Thankfully, the cheetahs did not approach the little boy despite his vulnerability and he was treated only for bruising, which is understood to have resulted from his fall, by hospital staff.

Commenting on the animals' demeanour following the shocking event, another eyewitness surmised: "I think they [the cheetahs] were just curious as to what was going on and why somebody was in the pen with them. And everyone else is screaming and they probably got scared."

Despite the fact the child was uninjured by the animals, the executive director of the zoo, Dr. Christopher Kuhar asserted that it is highly likely charges wil be pressed against the child's mother, saying: "Unfortunately, we have a number of eyewitness accounts that point to the strong likelihood that the child was dangled over the rail."
