The photo was posted to the popular social media site four months ago, but has come to public attention again in recent days.
In an ill-advised tribute to her daughter, the young Instagram user captioned the horrifying shot: "Already smoking at a year old. Love you little one,"
Understandably disgusted by the photo which suggests the child was actively inhaling on the cigarette, Instagram users have wasted little time airing their views on the matter.
Condemning the young woman for her expletive-ridden posts and shocking uploads, one outraged member of the public wrote: "You are the worst of life itself."
Most worryingly perhaps, the photo, despite its shocking nature, has also garnered a number of likes, amassing over 2,000 since its original upload.
Commenting on the matter, Antonia Nieto, the President of the Spanish Association of Pediatricians, said: ‘I think the police would definitely consider it to be child abuse, it is just absolutely unbelievable."
Social media users have called for police intervention, with one writing; "You disgust me as a mother and as a woman and hopefully the girl is taken away."
It is unclear whether any action has been taken against the young mother at this point,
