Taking the kids to the swimming pool on a rainy day is definitely one of the best ways to keep them entertained for an hour or so, but sadly for swimmers in Scotland a leisurely swim turned into something much worse.

Reports are emerging of a chemical leak at East Sands Leisure Centre in St. Andrews this afternoon, that has resulted in a number of people being treated for symptoms, including breathing difficulties.

At least 13 fire engines and 55 firefighters took to the scene, which saw 19 swimmers being taken to hospital amid fears they inhaled the chemical compound sodium hypochlorite.

The chemical, which usually dissolves in water, is typically used as a bleaching agent and disinfectant, and can cause a number of problems when inhaled or injested.

A spokesman for Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed to The Express that paramedics were dealing with “multiple casualties”, but, thankfully, there have been no reported fatalities at present.

We’re wishing everyone involved a speedy recovery.
