Being diagnosed with cancer is a very difficult piece of news to come to terms with, but to see your child going through the very same ordeal must be absolutely heartbreaking.

This is what Erica Dickens has had to go through in recent years, after receiving her breast cancer diagnosis just six weeks ahead of finding out that her son Toby had leukaemia.

At just three years of age, Toby battled his illness at the same time as his mother, who ended up getting a mastectomy and going through four cycles of chemotherapy as part of her own fight.

After years of battling however, the Dickens family has an extra reason to celebrate this festive season – both Erica and Toby are now cancer-free, just in time for Christmas.

In an interview with The Mirror, mum Erica said: “Last Christmas, we didn’t know if Toby would be at home. He was in and out of hospital due to infections, and I had a bad reaction to my treatment, so I spent a lot of the day in bed. This year, we can’t wait to celebrate. Toby can’t wait for Santa to come.”

The family will be marking the magnificent development with a special TV ad for Cancer Research UK, which they will watch with Toby’s little brother, two-year-old Jake, and dad Ben.

We’re sending best wishes to the family for the wonderful Christmas they so deserve.
