Few kids can resist the lure of a light-up shoe, but one family has insisted that they will not be making another purchase of the popular footwear following a recent frightening incident.

Reddit user Jovianflower took to the social networking site this week to share her concerns and suspicions that her son’s light-up shoes actually caused a fire in her family’s car.

In her post (link here), the mother revealed how she went out to the car, where the shoes were (thankfully not on her son’s feet), only to find that a fire had broken out. The damage caused was extensive – not only did it burn the floor, but the back seat and back of the passenger seat were also destroyed.

“We came to the conclusion (along with the fire marshal) that it was my son’s light-up shoes that started the fire. They were completely burnt and charred up, with the wires from the lights sticking out,” she added.

She went on the link to an article published by a local news website, containing updated information on the incident.

According to Khou11, the local county fire marshal’s office is still investigating the fire and, although they have been unable to confirm the exact cause, the shoes have yet to be ruled out.

So far, Reddit users have speculated that cheap foam may have been used to insulate the wire inside of the shoes – a clear and obvious safety hazard.

Would you worry about the safety of light-up shoes after hearing this report?
