Presenter Amanda Holden recently came under fire for sending her daughter to school dressed as Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman, and now another mum has been criticised for her ‘inappropriate’ choice of costume for her son’s school’s World Book Day celebrations.

Nicola Scholes didn’t see anything wrong with dressing her 11-year-old son up as Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey, but was shocked when she received a phone call later that morning saying that he had been excluded from the school’s activities and photographs over his ‘inappropriate’ attire.

For the costume, Liam wore a grey suit and carried cable ties and an eye mask, which Nicola admits she thought was “funny”.

In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Nicola said: “We were walking home from school and he had the idea of going as Christian Grey. At first we laughed it off but then we discussed it with a few friends and saw the funny side and decided it was quite a good costume idea.”

She added: “The cable ties were tiny and not enough to do anything with them. We didn’t think there would be a problem.”

Needless to say, Nicola took issue with the teachers singling out her son for exclusion, particularly as one of the staff had dressed as the serial killer from the TV show Dexter.

“I don’t see why sex is seen as more offensive than murder,” she said.
