The mother of a teenage boy has issued a warning to young people after her son was hospitalised following his participation in the 'Duct Tape Challenge."

The so-called challenge which has been making waves online sees teenagers wrap themselves in duct tape before being tied to a chair in a bid to see how quickly they may be able to break free.

Commenting on the trend, the mother of 14-year-old Skylar Fish who crushed his left eye socket after taking part in the challenge, said: "I want people to stop and think that there are so many risks to any of these challenges. They're dangerous."

Skylar, who is from Washington, was hospitalised after falling into a window during the challenge and sustaining injuries which will have a lasting effect.

Commenting on her son's injuries while reflecting on the motivation for a teen's participation in the challenge, Skylar's mum urges teens to think twice, saying: "It crushed his whole eye socket and pinched off nerves in his eye. They’re just looking at what’s fun, what’s cool, what’s going to impress their friends."

Thankfully, Skylar's tragic story has resulted in online criticism of the challenge, with social media users taking to Twitter to condemn the practice and question the purpose of the dangerous trend.

"Hey teens of the internet I have a new challenge for you to try. It's called stop trying stupid ass challenges, wrote one Twitter user, while another suggested: "Dear humans, can we not do stupid sh*t like the #ducttapechallenge ? Let's think, shall we?"
