As we look back on the New Year's preparations, we stop and spare a thought for the family of River Arama Parry, a little boy who lost his life in tragic circumstances last Wednesday.

According to reports, the 21-month-old tot died after drowning in the swimming pool of a family member's home. The incident occurred in Canberra, Australia, where River and his family were visiting relatives.

Once the accident was discovered, emergency services were immediately called to the scene. However, despite attempts to revive him, little River succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

While police are currently investigating the devastating incident, the circumstances are not being treated as suspicious.

Describing her late son as "the light of everyone's life", distraught mum Tynan Abel sent a poignant message out to parents everywhere: appreciate every moment you get to spend with your kids.

Speaking to Essential Baby, Ms Abel said: "Play with them if they're pulling on your shirt and you're washing the dishes, and they just want a moment of your time. Play with them because that time means everything to them. That moment means everything to a little boy or a girl," she said.

A Go Fund Me page (link here) has now been set up to raise funds for the family.
