A petition to have her charged with neglect garnered major support last week, but it has emerged that authorities in Ohio will not be bringing criminal charges against the mother of the little boy who fell into Cincinnati Zoo’s gorilla enclosure.

According to the New York Post, police did not recommend for Michelle Gregg to face reckless-endangerment charges, having investigated whether or not she was at fault in the incident. They determined that, in this case, the child “just scampered off”.

As part of their investigation, child service workers had visited Gregg’s home, which she shares with Deonne Dickerson.

After the decision not to charge Ms Gregg was announced, a representative for the family said: “This is one more step in allowing us to put this tragic episode behind us and return to our normal family life.”

Meanwhile, the zoo’s gorilla enclosure is set to be reopened shortly with new and improved safety features, including a higher surrounding barrier as well as wooden beams and rope netting.
