Last week, Alexander Pacteau pleaded guilty to the murder of Irish woman Karen Buckley, and today his own mother has spoken out about the tragic incident.

Just days after the Buckley family issued a heartbreaking statement outside Glasgow’s High Court, Noreen Dow admitted that an apology for her son’s actions would “simply not be enough”.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Ms Dow said: “It has just been completely and utterly devastating. We still haven’t really come to terms with it. To describe it as traumatic is a massive understatement for us and Karen’s family.”

“I don’t think an apology will suffice. If that was my daughter, it simply wouldn’t suffice. We are heartbroken for Karen’s family,” she added.

Ms Dow added that she and her family will be issuing a statement at some stage this week.

Her interview comes just days after 21-year-old Pacteau pleaded guilty to the Irish nurse’s murder.

The Buckley family appeared before the court in Glasgow for Pacteau’s hearing, with dad John making an emotional appearance for awaiting media.

Describing Pacteau as “truly evil”, he said: “There are no words to describe what we went through. Being told Karen was brutally murdered, and having to phone our three sons and tell them Karen was dead was one of the hardest things we’ve had to do.”
