Mavis Wanczyk is having a good day today. Do you want to know how we know? She woke up over $400 MILLION richer this morning.

The 53-year-old has made headlines this week, after winning the Powerball jackpot, which was standing at a $758.7 fortune.

Mavis, a clerical worker in a hospital in her native Massachusetts, claimed the prize after matching all six numbers of the Powerball draw. Apparently, the chances of doing so stand at one in 292.2 million.

She bought five tickets, two of which were computer-generated. The winning ticket contained numbers she had chosen based on her family’s birthdays.

After realising that she had won, Mavis claimed her prize, opting to collect a lump sum. After taxes, the actual sum Mavis received worked out at $480 million.

The jackpot win is the largest single-ticket prize in US history – lucky Mavis!

Mavis came forward to reveal her identity at a special press conference this week, and opened up about the rollercoaster 24 hours she had had since discovering her win.

Can you guess what the first thing she did was? Of course you can – she called up her boss and told them that she wouldn’t be coming back in!

As for her plans for her fortune, Mavis said: “The first thing I want to do is just sit back and relax.”

Mavis is mother to two adult children; a son and a daughter.

This is an incredibly exciting time for Mavis, but such a huge sum of money will undoubtedly come with security concerns. Thankfully, people are already looking out for her.

Also speaking at the press conference, a Massachusetts treasurer offered some solid advice.

“A lot of people will be coming at them with all sorts of things,” explained Deb Goldberg.

“I highly encourage them to find very, very good lawyers and advisers and think very, very carefully about how they are going to manage their assets.”

Congratulations to Mavis and her family – we hope she enjoys every cent!
