One mum has voiced disdain for her son's school after they apparently refused to allow her or her partner, Claire, attend a 'Bring Your Dad to Class' day.

The father of Kerri Hughes son Atticus, who attends the Blean Primary School in Kent, was unable to make an appearance at the school on the specified day due to work commitments, so Kerri suggested herself or her partner could go in absence, but was refused.

Having been told of the news, nine-year-old Atticus put pen to paper and expressed his disappointment at the school's decision.

Unable to understand their reasoning, Atticus wrote: "I feel very annoyed about the fact that there is a dads only day and that mums are not allowed to go."

Echoing her son's feelings, 39-year-old Kerri said: "I do not understand why there would be a day for male family members and not for female family members. Is this not indirect discrimination? I do not understand how this day can go ahead without questions being asked."

Paying tribute to mums everywhere, Atticus told the school in no uncertain terms why he feels their decision is unjustified, writing: "I think it is very upsetting because mums do all the work and never get time to see the child's work and do activities with the child, so I think it is wrong."

However, the school has since denied the claim and invited the couple to the event after receiving an email of complaint form Atticus' mother.

Commenting on the issue, head teacher Lynn Lawrence said: "Whilst we recognise that both mothers and fathers make distinct and complementary contributions to both family life and learning in school, by inviting male role models into school we are being explicit in our belief that we are committed to engaging with both parents."

Explaining the motivation behind the specific days, she went on to say: "The approach of specifically targeting fathers or extended family is not unique to Blean School and we would wish to reassure mothers and other family members that we do not believe that this devalues their enormous contribution but enhances it."
