A mum from Texas who was killed by police after she shot her daughters is believed to have been an outspoken gun advocate.

Christy Sheats murdered her two children – Taylor, 22, and 17-year-old Madison – on Friday, and according to her Facebook page, the mum-of-two was a gun advocate, who previously said that she earned the right to protect her family with the use of a weapon.

"It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away, but that's exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semi-automatic handguns,' she wrote on Facebook back in March.

According to People magazine, 42-year-old Christy had a history of mental health issues and the police had been called to the family home on a number of occasions.

The reason for the argument remains unclear, and the girls’ father, Jason Sheats, who only recently reunited with Christy following a period of separation, is said to have begged the mum not to shoot.

Talking to the Houston Chronicle, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said: “It was a family argument that turned into a shooting. But we’re still trying to put the pieces together.”

Sadly, Madison was pronounced dead at the scene while Taylor passed away in hospital. Jason, the only survivor, was taken to hospital for distress.
