We rely on doctors and medical staff for some of the most important decisions and treatments regarding our bodies, so when a mistake is made on their part it can be life-changing.

Yesenia Pacheco, a mother-of-two, is suing a Seattle clinic after staff mistakenly gave her a flu shot instead of a birth control shot. She subsequently went on to give birth to a daughter.

Pacheco didn’t want to have any more children, which is why she attended her local community health centre every three months, to receive an injection of the birth control shot Depo-Provera.

She was naturally surprised then, when she discovered back in 2011 that she was expecting a baby. When she returned to the centre, her records showed that she had actually been given a flu shot instead of her birth control injection.

Pacheco has this month filed a “wrongful life” lawsuit against the clinic, with details of the shocking story emerging this week.

Not only do the court documents show that the clinic staff suggested an abortion, but it has also emerged that her daughter Sandra was born with a brain disorder. The child, who suffers from seizures and motor-skill disability as a result, requires lifelong care.

Pacheco is now claiming for as yet unspecified damages.

“Wrongful life is to compensate Sandra for all the medical and therapy expenses she’ll incur during her life, as well as her pain and suffering for being born with a brain disorder that will limit her life,” explained an attorney.
