We are forever being warned about the dangers of sharing too much information online, and it seems that one mum in the States has learned this the hard way.

Ashton Hamner has spoken of her horror and outrage after discovering that photos of her 16-month-old daughter were made into a series of offensive memes.

The mum had no idea that, when she shared photos of her little girl to Facebook, someone was waiting to steal and doctor them.

Among the horrific memes created using Ashton’s happy family photos were one which read: “When you find out your baby has cancer and realise you’re gonna get your old life back”.

Speaking out to local media about her reaction to finding the memes, Ashton said: “I cried. That’s all I could do. I was very upset about it, I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I went back and changed all of my settings, and now no one can access my photos unless they’re on my friends group.”

Given how Ashton’s daughter’s image was technically altered by another person without permission, legal experts claim that she has a possible defamation case on her hands.

This serves as a very serious warning to parents everywhere. Be careful to ensure that the appropriate privacy settings are in operation, to reduce any risks like this happening.
