For anyone who thinks that one voice can’t possibly make a difference, the following report will give you a brand new perspective on life.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, has announced that he will oversee the creation of 500,000 new daycare slots for children, after a working mum wrote a damning open letter condemning the current system.

The mum, an anonymous blogger, wrote a letter revealing how, after struggling to find adequate daycare for her child, she had no option but to quit her job to look after her child full-time.

Penned in Japanese, the letter went viral around the country and clearly hit on a nerve. Things kicked up a gear then, when Abe said that there was no way to tell that the letter was legitimate as it came from an anonymous author. Shortly after his statement went public, picketers began protesting outside government buildings, holding up signs reading, ‘It’s me!’

A petition was launched shortly after, demanding improvements to the daycare system, and it garnered overwhelming support.

In response, Abe has promised to introduce changes to the system, with 500,000 new daycare slots set to be created before the end of 2017. It is hoped that this will end waiting lists and facilitate working mothers hoping to get back to work after maternity leave.

This is wonderful proof of how one powerful voice can make a difference.
