Parenting can be downright difficult sometimes; while you feel that you are doing your best with your little ones, their behaviour can often leave you in despair.

One mum who had quite enough of her 13-year-old son’s behaviour recently was ‘Estella’. Sick and tired of young Aaron’s boasts about ‘making his own money’ from YouTube videos, and lying about doing his homework, Estella decided to give him a harsh dose of reality.

The frustrated mother went on to issue Aaron with a $717 bill for everyday things such as electricity, internet and food, in a bid to remind him of his place in the home.

“Since you seem to have forgotten you are only 13, and I’m the parent, and that you won’t be controlled, I guess you will need a lesson in independence. Also, as you threw in my face that you are making money now, it will be easier to buy back all the items I bought for you in the past. If you would like your lamp/ light bulbs or access to the internet, you will need to pay your share of costs,” wrote Estella.

She also went on to provide him with a list of mandatory chores which, if he failed to carry out, would incur a $30 ‘maid fee’.

Estella’s strict take on discipline went viral soon after she shared a photo of the letter to Facebook, and her approach has proven very controversial. While some have commended Estella for the move, others have accused her of being too harsh.

“This is a great tactic for the older children, but what are some solid similar tactics that could be put in place for the younger children,” queried one follower, while another wrote, “good job”.

Among those left unimpressed, however, was a fellow mum who wrote: “What’s wrong with her? I hate dictatorship. The fact that she sees her son as a possession or subject rather than an individual is so sad.”

In response to the criticism, Estella shared an update with her followers, insisting that while her parenting style “doesn’t work for everyone”, it has proven effective for her.
