Social media plays a major role in our daily lives, and a number of women have been using it to educate others on their own experiences.

One such woman is Melanie Williams, a 36-year-old mum whose warning message on Facebook has gone viral in the past 24 hours.

Melanie shared a photo of herself giving the thumbs-up, with her thumb appearing bruised. However, there is more to this story than you may first think.

She wrote: “See that on my thumb? Do you know what it is? It’s skin cancer. This grew from nothing in a matter of weeks. I thought it was just a fungal infection or a wart. Sadly not.”

Explaining that the cancer has not spread, and how half of her thumb is being removed next week, Melanie revealed the motivation behind her post.

“This may not have been the case if I’d left it and not got it checked out. I don’t want your sympathy, I want more awareness. Therefore, please go and get any changes or growths on your skin checked out, please tell people around you to get checked as well,” she added.

The post has gone viral, with many paying tribute to Melanie’s decision to spread awareness.
